Today, Migrante Netherlands and Balik/Bayan NL met with representatives of Bij1 Utrecht at the Utrecht Stadhuis (City Hall) to strengthen our common stand against the Asielwet which is set to criminalize undocumented migrants in the Netherlands if passed. ✊🏽
We discussed Bij1’s important efforts to push the Gemeenteraad (City Council) in declaring Utrecht a Sanctuary City — a safe place where undocumented people and refugees can have equal access to housing, healthcare, and other basic rights as citizens of Utrecht.
We also talked about the push for Utrecht to provide a City ID that would allow undocumented migrants to access city services and live with dignity despite their irregular status.
